West African Alliance contributes to ECOWAS Regional Carbon Market Platform

ECOWAS is advancing a shared regional approach to carbon markets through the development of a regional carbon market platform. In this context, a three-day validation workshop was held in Abuja, bringing together Member States, regional and international institutions, development partners, and technical experts to finalise the framework for a credible, transparent, and inclusive regional carbon market platform.
The initiative aims to strengthen access to climate finance, build national capacities, and enable West Africa to better harness its carbon market potential in support of climate action and sustainable development.
Represented by Coordinator Ousmane Fall SARR and Local Expert Ismaila Wiafe, the West African Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance actively participated in the workshop and contributed to the discussions that shaped the final outcome.
The validation of the framework marks an important milestone towards its adoption and operationalisation across the region. The Alliance’s participation also highlighted the importance of strong regional collaboration and leveraging existing expertise and capacities within institutions already working on carbon market readiness and climate finance implementation in West Africa.
By bringing together existing knowledge, experience, and institutional capacities, ECOWAS can strengthen the foundations of a regional carbon market that is effective, inclusive, and responsive to West Africa’s climate and development priorities.
