Strengthening National Capacities for the Effective Implementation of Article 6 in Côte d’Ivoire
Carbon markets represent a strategic opportunity for African countries to mobilize additional climate finance while accelerating the implementation of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). To fully benefit from these mechanisms, national institutions must be equipped with the technical expertise and operational tools required to participate effectively, transparently, and in alignment with international standards.
As part of its continued support to member countries, the West African Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance (WAA) provided targeted technical support to the Carbon Market Office (Bureau Marché Carbone – BMC) of Côte d’Ivoire through an online capacity-building workshop held on 15–16 July 2026.
Over the course of two intensive days, BMC participants strengthened their understanding of the cooperative approaches established under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and explored recent developments in the global carbon market landscape. The training covered the functioning of carbon markets—from voluntary carbon markets to compliance mechanisms—the implementation modalities of Articles 6.2, 6.4 and 6.8, the operational tools and registries required for implementation, as well as practical lessons learned from other African countries advancing the implementation of Article 6.
The online workshop also provided an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in international climate negotiations and their implications for African countries. These exchanges enabled participants to gain deeper insights into the institutional, technical, and strategic considerations required to effectively operationalize Article 6 at the national level.
Beyond knowledge sharing, this capacity-building initiative reflects the Alliance’s broader commitment to supporting its member countries in establishing robust national frameworks that ensure environmental integrity, effective governance, and the sustainable use of carbon markets as instruments for climate action and development.
Strengthening the capacities of the Carbon Market Office of Côte d’Ivoire represents an important step in the country’s preparation for the implementation of Article 6. By enhancing the technical and operational skills of BMC experts, Côte d’Ivoire is progressively building the foundations needed to develop high-quality carbon projects, attract climate finance, and contribute effectively to the achievement of its national climate objectives.
The West African Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance commends the commitment and active participation of the Bureau Marché Carbone team throughout the training. The Alliance also extends its sincere appreciation to its technical partners, Perspectives Climate Group and Afrique Énergie Environnement (AEE), for their valuable expertise and support in delivering this capacity-building activity.
Through initiatives such as this, the WAA reaffirms its commitment to strengthening institutional capacities across West Africa and enabling countries to engage effectively, credibly, and strategically in international carbon markets. By investing in technical expertise and institutional readiness, the Alliance contributes to positioning carbon markets as a powerful catalyst for climate finance and sustainable development across the region.
