SB64: Strengthening African Carbon Markets through Knowledge Sharing and Innovation

During the GIZ Carbon Markets Week 2026 in Bonn, the West African Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance had the opportunity to engage with its counterparts from Eastern and Southern Africa in a dedicated session on regional collaboration and peer learning.
More than a platform for presentations, the exchange provided a valuable opportunity to share experiences, lessons learned, and practical approaches to supporting countries in implementing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Discussions highlighted common challenges, emerging opportunities, and the importance of building stronger partnerships across the continent to advance high-integrity carbon markets.

As part of the session, the West African Alliance showcased several of the tools it has developed to support capacity building and knowledge generation across the region. These included the Knowledge Hub, designed to facilitate access to information, resources, and technical expertise on carbon markets, as well as the newly launched Carbon Market Simulator, an innovative tool that enables stakeholders to explore different market scenarios, assess potential outcomes, and strengthen their preparedness for carbon market participation.
These tools reflect a broader commitment to ensuring that African countries are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and institutional capacity needed to effectively engage in international carbon markets while advancing their sustainable development priorities.

The discussions in Bonn reaffirmed a key message: Africa’s success in carbon markets will be strengthened not only by national efforts, but also by regional cooperation, shared learning, and collective action.
We extend our appreciation to GIZ and our sister alliances from Eastern and Southern Africa for the rich exchanges and their continued commitment to building a strong and coordinated African voice on carbon markets and climate finance.
