Alliance member meeting and UNFCCC regional workshop on carbon pricing and carbon markets
Date: 28 October to 1 November 2024
Location: Praia, Cabo Verde
A meeting of the members of the West African Alliance will be convened later this month in Cabo Verde, in conjunction with a United Nations Regional Dialogue on Carbon Pricing (REdiCAP).
This meeting will be an opportunity to take stock of the work of the Alliance, and strengthen it by looking forward at the next few years.
Alliance members’ needs have changed over the past four years as international rules for Article 6 have become increasingly clear and pioneering Alliance countries have set strong precedents in Article 6 readiness. Member countries are prioritizing and increasingly leveraging Article 6 to attract investment in support of national climate policy goals. With some members already having adopted national governance frameworks for Article 6 activities.
As the Alliance has entered a new phase it has extensively consulted with its member countries to understand their evolving needs and demands. Fruitful discussions during member meetings in Saly (May 2023) and Abidjan (September 2023) helped shape the Alliance’s priorities and activities for the next years.
The member meeting will be held back-to-back with the United Nations Climate Change (UNFCCC) REdiCAP workshop.
The UNFCCC, through its Regional Collaboration Centres (RCC) in Lome and with the collaboration of the Alliance and its member Cabo Verde, will dedicate four days to advancing understanding and implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
This workshop will be open to participants from the wider African continent, who will therefore have the combined opportunity of learning from UNFCCC experts and discovering what has been put in place in the West African region.
The REdiCAP event will also focus on the practical aspects of carbon pricing and its integration into national strategies. The event will build upon the previous successes and lessons learned from the Regional Dialogues and Capacity Building Workshops organized during the Regional Climate Weeks in 2023. This series of workshops will provide targeted training on the technical aspects, facilitate dialogue, and promote collaborative strategies between Parties and stakeholders.
Thanks to the co-development, design and implementation by the UNFCCC and the RCC Lome, as well as input from the Alliance, the event will be responsive to regional needs, while ensuring a consistency of knowledge, skills and action plans to guide global progress on Article 6, carbon pricing, and mitigating climate change.
